Signs the battery is the problem

Battery wear is gradual until it suddenly is not. The pattern below is what a cell at the end of its life looks like from the outside:

Windows reports "plugged in, not charging"
Shuts down the instant the charger is unplugged, even at a high percentage

A swollen battery is not something to leave for later

A cell that has started to swell — pushing the trackpad up, lifting the keyboard, or separating the case along a seam — has failed in the way that actually matters. Stop charging it, keep it out of a bag and away from anywhere warm, and get it dealt with. The replacement itself is routine. Leaving a swollen lithium cell in a closed laptop for another few months is the part that is not.

Genuine, equivalent, or not worth fitting

Manufacturer batteries are the safe default where they are still made, and for older machines a good third-party cell is often the only option left. What is worth avoiding is the bottom of the market, where the stated capacity is fiction and the protection circuitry is an afterthought. You are told which of the three your model realistically has available, and what each would cost, before anything is ordered.

Checking it is the battery at all

A laptop that will not hold charge sometimes has a healthy battery and a failing charging circuit, a broken power socket or a charger that has quietly died. Windows and macOS both keep a cycle count and a health figure for the cell, which takes a minute to read and settles the question. If the battery is fine, you get told that instead of sold one.

Diagnostics are free when you bring it in, which matters here more than most: if the battery is healthy and the fault is the charging circuit or the charger, you get told that rather than sold a battery. Cell prices depend on the model and on whether a manufacturer part is still made, so the figure is quoted before anything is ordered.
